How do you get your brand recommended by ChatGPT?

ChatGPT recommends the brands it can cite. To be recommended, a brand needs three things in place: correct, current facts on its own site that the engine can read (so branded answers are right), pages that answer the category questions buyers ask, and mentions in the independent sources the engine cites for that category, which are mostly editorial, community and review pages rather than the brand's own.

Step one: fix what it already says about you

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the questions a buyer asks when checking you by name: what you do, pricing, whether you are safe or legitimate, who is behind you. Grade every answer against your own site. Wrong or stale answers are the cheapest thing to fix and the most expensive to leave: a correction page, an FAQ that mirrors the branded questions, and the entity basics (schema markup, llms.txt, crawler access) give the engine a source to quote.

Step two: answer the category questions on your site

List the questions buyers ask when they do not know you yet: best options, how to choose, alternatives to the rival. For each one where you are close (named by some engines, or named late), publish an answer-first page with a comparison table where the question compares. Owned pages are cited less than third-party ones, but they are cited most when they answer the exact question.

Step three: get into the sources it cites

Studies of AI citations put community discussion, editorial and trade media, and review sites far above brand-owned pages. Find which domains the engines cite for your category, then earn presence there: genuine community answers, coverage in the trade outlets, listings on the comparison pages the engine keeps quoting. Google explicitly discourages inauthentic mentions; the presence has to be real. This is the step no monitoring tool does for you.

Step four: re-measure weekly

AI answers are sampled and they move. Ask the same questions every week on every engine, keep trust (branded answers correct) and visibility (named on category questions) as separate numbers, and attribute changes to what shipped.

Frequently asked

How long does it take to get recommended by ChatGPT?

Branded corrections can show within weeks once the engine re-reads the site. Category visibility depends on third-party citations and typically takes months of placements. Nobody publishes a reliable benchmark; measure your own.

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my brand?

No. There is no paid placement inside the recommendation. Sponsored answer formats are separate and labelled.

Does the same approach work for Perplexity, Gemini and Claude?

Yes, with different source mixes: Perplexity leans on fresh web pages and citations, Google AI Overviews on Google's index, Claude and ChatGPT on a blend of training data and live search. Measure each engine separately.
