Do Reddit and YouTube still matter for AI visibility?
Reddit and YouTube still matter for AI visibility, but by engine: Ahrefs1 found in October 2026 that YouTube was 38.6% of external citations in branded AI Overviews (E1), while Otterly2, 3, 4, 5 measured Reddit at 0.227% of ChatGPT citations by September 2026 (E5). Does YouTube still matter for AI visibility?
Ahrefs checked US desktop branded searches on 29 September 2026 and found an AI Overview on 82.91% of them, up from 61.3% in July. Those overviews lean on a short list of outside sources.
In the branded overviews Ahrefs examined, Wikipedia took 71.9% of external citations and YouTube 38.6%. Only one competitor-owned domain appeared across the 57 source lists Ahrefs checked, and only 2 of 58 overviews with visible text named competitors (3.4%). For a brand, that may mean the page an engine shows about you is often built from sources you do not own.
Kevin Indig6, citing an Ahrefs study in October 2026, reports that YouTube mentions correlated 0.7 with AI visibility in Google AI Overviews, against 0.3 for Domain Rating. He adds that Peec AI sees YouTube cited repeatedly across AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity. These are correlations, not causal findings.
The chart below shows the three external sources Ahrefs counted most in branded AI Overviews, and where YouTube sits among them.
Does Reddit still matter, or did ChatGPT end it?
Otterly measured reddit.com falling from 4.01% to 0.44% of ChatGPT citations on 8 August 2026, an 89% drop that coincided with the ChatGPT 5.6 rollout. It reached 0.227% by September. That finding is specific to that ChatGPT version.
Other engines moved differently. Otterly measured Reddit's share of citations on Google AI Overviews and AI Mode moving up between July and September 2026 (E5), though whether by percentage points or percent change is not stated. Its reading of 20 September 2026 put Reddit at 5.4% of Google AI Overviews citations and 5.3% of AI Mode citations. Claude and Copilot sat at 0.00% in every period (Otterly, October 2026).
Otterly also found that forums and video made up 25% of citations on Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, against under 3% on other engines, mostly from Reddit and YouTube. Google's answers may be where the two platforms carry the most weight in that data.

Which domains do engines cite most when buyers ask about AI visibility tools?
New Map's measurement7 found reddit.com cited in 20 of 146 answers (13.7%) and youtube.com in 16 of 146 (11%). That is one week's reading of 68 questions about AI visibility tools on 3 engines (146 answers), not a trend: Perplexity cited a source in only 7 of its 68 answers, and Claude Code's 10 answers are too few to read alone. Method: how New Map measures.
Those two platforms topped the list, ahead of dageno.ai and tryprofound.com, each cited in 11 answers. The reading did not break reddit.com citations out by engine.
Wikipedia, the largest source in Ahrefs' branded overviews, appeared in 1 of 146 New Map answers (0.7%). Ahrefs looked at brand-name searches, while New Map asked category questions where the buyer does not know a brand yet, which may explain part of the gap. We have not tested that explanation.
Does Reddit's weight change by country and source type?
It does. Otterly's German study (3.95M citations, 16 industries, seven engines, October 2026) put Reddit at 0.60% of German AI citations against 1.79% of US ones. Otterly's French study (3.77M citations, seven engines, October 2026) put Reddit at 0.62% of citations against 1.79% in the US.
Our read: a Reddit plan built on US numbers may overstate the platform's weight in Germany and France. Otterly's German work also shows country shapes the rest of the mix: associations took 8.9% of German citations against 5.3% of US ones.
Source type matters too. Community sources accounted for 8.6% in Otterly's classification work. The study classified 450,473 citations, which made up 72.9% of Otterly's full dataset. Brand-owned pages took 38.9% and paid publishers 36.6%. Community is the smaller share, so authentic presence there is likely one part of a programme, not the whole of it.
What should a brand do about Reddit and YouTube?
Treat each platform as a per-engine question. Omnia data reported by Kevin Indig in May 2026 found only 2.37% of cited URLs appeared in all of ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews for the same prompt, across 3.7M citations. Engines rarely agree on sources, so plan sources per engine.
| Finding | Number | Source | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube share of external citations, branded AI Overviews | 38.6% | Ahrefs | October 2026 |
| Forums and video share, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | 25% | Otterly | October 2026 |
